UNESCO rates Paraty as a World Heritage site. To appreciate its structure and history is to experience, in just one place, all that a "small world" can offer: islands, beaches, waterfalls, trails, gastronomy, art and culture, music, handicrafts... in a miniature paradise located at the southeastern tip of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil. You may also experience the local indigenous culture, or visit several of the region's famous cachaça (a rum-like traditional Brazilian beverage) distilleries, observe its production, and, naturally, taste the many exotic varieties. The nearby state park of Serra da Bocaina is home to a small mountain ridge where trailing will take you through gorgeous beaches, waterfalls, and islands, all within a beautifully preserved Atlantic forest, full of exquisite flora and fauna. The city's historic downtown invites visitors to walk through 18th-century stone-paved streets and alleys that preserve that period's original architecture. In almost every corner of this environment, you may taste the rich local cuisine, filled with unique sweets and pastries, in an atmosphere bathed under old-style street lamps' lights and surrounded by good and vibrant live music. This is Paraty... a small charming world of culture, music, history, and gastronomy.

My name is Claudia, a Brazilian, born in Rio de Janeiro, a 60 years old retired English teacher, who loves traveling, walking, riding a bike, diving in different beaches and waterfalls, and also a Chef. I will be proud if, on our trip, you could enjoy a meal prepared by me.

We will enjoy sleeping in bunk beds but breakfast is included. We also have a "support kitchen" to prepare small meals during the day. The hostel is situated in Paraty, nearby the historic downtown. The hostel is also situated on a fantastic beach, inside a huge garden full of tropical species. Do you have a question? You can let me know in the Q&A section!

Trip Itinerary
1

Trindade

Day 1-2
Trindade (Portuguese for "trinity") village is a paradise surrounded by beaches. In this first stop, we will enjoy the local hospitality, walk along its main beaches, go trailing in the State Park of Serra da Bocaina, and observe the rich fauna and flora of the Atlantic Forest. We will have lunch in the village, enjoy live music and savor locally produced cachaças and their many flavors. After sunset, we will return to the hostel.
2

Paraty Mirim

Day 2-3
After a thirty-minute drive through the mountains of historic Paraty, we will visit this village, home to the Guarani-Mbya, an indigenous people of pre-Colombian times. We may interact with the inhabitants and purchase their handicrafts. The main beach houses a church dating back to the 1700s and it is possible to practice several water sports. We can also go through minor trails and take walks around. Local stands offer good cuisine for lunch. Afterward, we will return to Paraty's downtown for visiting, shopping, and sightseeing before making it back to the hostel.
3

Lula Beach

Day 3-4
At this stop, we must take the tour through the emerald green seawaters, the reason for the region's name of Costa Verde (Green Coast). We will visit small islands and beaches, including the renowned Praia da Lula (Squid Beach), and return downtown at the end of the day.
4

Alambique Paratiana

Day 4-5
The fourth stop is a day jeep tour to visit to the cachaça distilleries in the mountains, tasting their produce. There is also the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful waterfalls in the surroundings. It will last about 6 hours with a lunch stop on the way.
5

Centro Histórico de Paraty

Day 5
On the last day, we will go through a more detailed visit to the historic center to explore the architecture, churches, art galleries, and last-minute shopping. It will be a nice occasion to take pictures. After lunch, the hostel checkout and return to Rio de Janeiro.
