A historical "road-movie" (& great party) through the millennia of Belgrade, Danube & Serbia, to a Greek island beach

Guided trip
What's special?
special A historian who hates boring history
special Secret places & amazing views
special Lot of joy and party between sightseeing
A quick, guided tour through Belgrade and Serbia's millennia of culture (and destruction) with a party loving historian. Explore Belgrade and then the right bank of Danube, with Neolithic, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish, Austro-Hungarian, communist and contemporary architecture, while we enjoy the many hidden gems of the city, party, eat well and relax. We will spend 4 nights in Belgrade, located in the Old Town, surrounded by nice street-cafes and close to everything! (as shown here on the first pic of Belgrade). We will visit Nikola Tesla's museum and his place of rest - the inventor of so many devises that we today wouldn't live without. Like the two-ways electricity power, the remote control, radio-transmitters and much more. The tours in the museum are guided, and you can, actually, experience electricity experiments going through your body, if you like! We will also swim in the Ada-lake with party-beaches. As well as Lido, the only Belgrade-beach on the Danube. The current there is fast and very strong! But it’s safe because of silk-soft sand (and because you won’t go too far if you wish to keep living :) The rest of the time, we can drink and eat in places that you must be a local to know. We will certainly also do a night or two in the crazy nightlife of Belgrade! I have done these tours for many years, and they are very popular. Different every time. 😃 It’s a lot of hi-story but a lot of breaks too, and I love to tell really interesting stories about European history that include all genders, sexual orientations, and some dirty (world) political "secrets". 🫣 After Belgrade, we will head off by the Danube to Smederevo - the last medieval stone-city ever built (in 1430). It has a royal residence that looks like a Disney-castle, and still has small toilettes in the walls! (I did a Sci.thesis in history about this place and the couple who built it and it is very intriguing).🤩 I’d want to rent a house close to it, preferably with a pool - to relax for a day in the nature, overlooking the Danube, Europe's largest and oldest river that has hosted all of its big cultures. The clean air and nature are intense there. Good grounding. Following the Danube further south by a rented car, we will visit the Neolithic site Lepenski Vir, around 8000 years old! It has just got a new museum, which I would love to see myself. Just an hour further down the road is the Roman city of Viminacium, found under the corn-fields at the beginning of 2000s. It holds an unusual mix of Romans and early Christians side by side, and the tour last about 1,5 hour. This site is just next to the town of Pozharevac, where the grave of the "most hated" Serb of the latest century - Slobodan Milosevic - is placed in the garden of his parent's family's house. If we're lucky, we can get into the mini-museum of Pozarevac, where they've "hidden" quite some treasuries from Viminacium! But, we need to be "Sherlock Holmes" to get in there. Thought - we can try! In any case, we will find a cooled garden and eat & drink Balkan-style! We can also skip Pozarevac completely and drive to a wonderful lake called Silver Lake? There we can rent a simple accommodation and swim and cool for a day. There is much more medieval, Byzantine-Serbian, as well as Roman and Turkish architecture to see on this route. There are marvellous medieval monasteries, big and small, 800-600 years old. Slightly hidden, but fully approachable by car. Especially Manasija from the 1420s, tall and beautiful, with a walled fortress around and nuns still living in it. They are keeping a lush colourful garden inside. It is perfectly on our route and takes an hour to be in there at most. I have seen them all! And would love to see them again - so I am open for your wishes. 🦋 It all depends on how fast we move. Or rather, how long we stay at each stop. I think we can avoid stress and enjoy what we manage. Or we can rent a boat for a part of the trip? Otherwise, this journey is planned to be done by a rented, large car. Going from Belgrade airport to Nish airport. Serbia is, actually, relatively small and much can be done in a couple of days. On the other hand, if we use the fast new highways, we will miss out on everything! All these gems are located on some super-old (prehistoric, or Roman roads, with a layer of medieval stones - and asphalt atop of it - from various times and regimes. Those roads are not straight and - not fast. But very charming. We can either rent a driver, or we can drive ourselves (I don’t drive :) All this details are open for discussion and I’d be happy to hear your desires beforehand. Please feel free to say what you would prefer - and let’s be creative. But, by the time we leave, we will have a clear plan. I know exactly where we are going, so it just depends on us how many small stops we make. 🔆 We are finally heading down to the town of Nish, where Constantine the Great was born. There we have an AIRPORT from which Ryanair is doing flights to Corfu in the Ionian Sea in Greece. Nish was used to be called Naissus in Roman times and was a very important crossroad between Rome and Constantinople. Today it is the 3rd largest city of Serbia. I don't know the place myself, but I know that many southern Serbs adore it - so we can explore! A night sleep is planned in Nish. I'd then love to spend some days lying down on a Greek beach - and from Corfu there are flights to, basically, all mayor cities in Europe. From there, you can certainly find a plane back home or wherever you'd like to connect to further. I have planned 3 days for the last stop on this Greek island, and everyone can leave when they wish. 😊 Just let me know in advance, so that I can do a correct booking. I'd love to stay a couple of days more after this Trip - and you are welcome to stay as long you want. And then I'll head back to Gothenburg, where I now live. 🇸🇪

About me: I am a historian, but I hate the boring way history is often taught! So, I love to make fusions of western and eastern history-schools, and tell it in a bright, funny, easily comprehensible way with all the juicy stuff included. I am Norwegian, but have also lived in Belgrade for many years because my mother is from there.

Where are we staying? I will rent a spacious and beautiful Airbnb flat in Belgrade with comfortable beds - in the Old Town, in the pedestrian area and close to everything! I'd love to sleep alone in the room, and so may you. But, not all of us can do that because it is hard to find a place in the pedestrian-area with so many bedrooms. So, please say freely what you'd prefer and I am sure most of it can be arranged. I personally wouldn't opt in for the most luxurious apartments. I need it to be clean, nice and comfy to function, and I love great locations and views! I thought we can rent a house with a pool in the town of Smederevo, or somewhere close - in nature. To regenerate before the real road-movie we are doing afterwards. We can choose if we will stay a day or two by the Silver Lake, made out of water from Danube. I'd rent a flat again in Nis. (I have asthma, and can't stay in shabby places). As I see it, we don't need any overwhelming luxury (don't even like that!), but good beds, cleans sheets and some aesthetics are a required if I want to stay happy, energetic & relaxed and keep you happy, energetic and relaxed. 😎 I’d love that each of us record and picture some small - fully consensual - sequences of our travel - and then we put it together, to truly make a little road movie! But only those who want it. There is so much contrasting scenery on this trip, so much freedom and also much “injustice and restrictions” that certainly will provoke some new thoughts, and feelings. It is also a perfect occasion to release some emotional stuff that we don’t want to carry anymore - to Danube! The “Master” will take it away! 🌊⛵️ I have included a 10% buffer fee in case there are extra costs, if not - you will get your money back. Also, the prices given here are calculated for 4 persons (as the prices are now - end of June). But all the accommodation and transportation still need to be booked. We will know the exact prices only when bookings are completed, which means when the money is paid. 🙂 I will seek accommodation as cheep as possible, but not below a comfortable standard. There are double rooms and single rooms. Small and big beds. And sofa beds. You will get refunded any eventual surplus from the bookings. Would you like to join my trip?

Trip Itinerary
1

Belgrade

Day 1-5
Let's eat and drink in the many cafés and restaurants, which take a local to know, while we visit fortresses and Nikola Tesla's museum and place of rest. He is the inventor of so many devises that we today wouldn't live without, like the two-way electricity power, the remote control, radio-transmitters and many other things. I am going to rent a wonderful apartment for 6 persons in the central and most charming, central part of the old city, where the breeze from the Danube will keep us cooled. (Along with aircondition, ofc :) While we have a party or two in the well known party-city on the banks of the rivers.
2

Smederevo

Day 5-6
Smederevo is the last medieval stone city ever built, and it is the world-record holder as the biggest walled city build in totally flat land. The people suffered badly in early 1400s to build this place, and all the guilts fell on the ruler’s foreign wife, who was thereafter remembered for 500 years as - Eirene the Cursed! I have done a scientific thesis in history at the University oof Oslo on the real reasons for such a wide-spread demonization of this woman, who experienced a similar situation as Marie Antoinette, only 300 years earlier.
3

Požarevac

Day 6
Viminacium - the Roman capital of Moesia. Here we have a very interesting fusion of romans and early christians, which we can see on the burial site. Also, the very last male roman emperor found refuge here from the hostile patrician families in Rome. Hi did, though, die here and, along with the entire city, was found at the beginning of the 2000s under the corn fileds. Eu has donated a lot of money to excavate this interesting site, where we see jewellery, frescoes, and the life of people from the first 3 centuries of the new era. The local government is reluctant (middle speaking) to excavate further, because they will have to move a stupid factory (that doen't even operate anymore), so ... there is still a lot to be excavated, and to fight for - to be excavated and preserved.
4

Lepenski vir

Day 6
The latest radiocarbon and AMS data suggests that the chronology of Lepenski Vir spans between 9500/7200–6000 BC. The late Lepenski Vir (6300–6000 BC) architectural phase saw the development of unique trapezoidal buildings and monumental sculpture. The Lepenski Vir site consists of one large settlement with around ten satellite villages. Numerous piscine sculptures and peculiar architectural remains have been found at the site. Such large sculptures so early in human history, and the original architectural solutions, define Lepenski Vir as a specific and very early phase in the development of European prehistoric culture. The site was notable for its outstanding level of preservation and the overall exceptional quality of its artifacts. Because the settlement was permanent and planned, with an organized societal life, Lepenski Vir is often labeled as "the first city in Europe"
5

Niš

Day 6-7
Nis (pronounsed - nish) was called Naissos in Roman times, and was a very important point on the routs between Rome and the litlle later Constantinople. Several Roman emperors were born in Niš or used it as a residence: Constantine the Great, the first Christian emperor and the founder of Constantinople, Constantius III, Constans, Vetranio, Julian, Valentinian I, Valens; and Justinian I. Later playing a prominent role in the history of the Byzantine Empire, the city's past would earn it the nickname Imperial City. During the ottomans, it degaraded a lot, but was still an important crossroad, as it will be for us. After about 400 years of Ottoman rule, the city was liberated in 1878 and became part of the Principality of Serbia, though not without great bloodshed — remnants of which can be found throughout the city. Constantine the Great Airport is Niš's international airport.
6

Corfu

Day 7-11
Corfu is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea. The island is bound up with the history of Greece from the beginnings of Greek mythology, and is marked by numerous battles and conquests. Ruins of ancient Greek temples and other archaeological sites of the ancient city of Korkyra are found in Palaiopolis. Medieval castles punctuating strategic locations across the island are a legacy of struggles in the Middle Ages against invasions by pirates and the Ottomans. It has beautiful beaches and reminds us that, regardless of what horros have happened, nature, beauty and the Sea will always wash it away and create joy and happiness again. And again. If we just let it. I suggest (who want so), that we can bring - and leave there - any past horrors, sadness, pain, tears, abandonment or illness, that we have carried from our past, or our ancestor's past. And we can surrender it to the mighty blue Posiedonos in the Ionian Sea. It is the INTENTION that counts. So, I guarantee that we will leave the islet released, and with much more space in our psyche and heart - for joy and happier experiences. Noone has to. It's just an option I wish to do, and you can join. There are a number of micro islands around it, that During Venetian rule in the early 16th century, held a monastery and a leprosarium. In 1798, during the French occupation, there was a military hospital, and during the period of British rule, in 1814, the leprosarium was once again opened for those who were "doomed'. Once again, during World War I, in 1915, this same islet was the only place on earth willing to receive the remaining Serbian army - infested with typhoid fever. Along with the Serbian goverment, king, regent, and anyone who managed to come so far. Because of that, many of them actually recovered and could do a come back in 1917, ultimately leding to the breach of the Austrian occupation of the Balkans and ultimately Europe. Centainly, even more of the infested solders did die and were "burried" in the sea, known as the "Blue Grave". In the Second WW, during the Axis Occupation of Greece, a Nazi concentration camp was set there for prisoners of the Greek Resistance movement. We are certainly not going to STAY any near of this little islet. :)
