It was initially commissioned by Abd al-Mu’min, leader of the Almohad Movement. Later, the gardens were renovated in 1870. The most beautiful part of this green-space is the lake, which is presided by a pavilion, also renovated by the sultan Abderrahmane of Morocco and the thousands of olive trees surrounding the area. The pavilion was built by the sultan Sidi Mohammed ibn Abdallah and it is believed that this is where the sultans met their companions.

In the 1980s, the property was purchased by the fashion designers, Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Bergé who worked to restore it. Today, the garden and villa complex is open to the public. Marrakech Tensift El Haouz
Day 3
tagine is an important part of Moroccan cuisine and has been a part of the culture for hundreds of years. The word tagine actually has two meanings. First, it refers to a type of North African cookware traditionally made of clay or ceramic. The bottom is a wide, shallow circular dish used for both cooking and serving, while the top of the tagine is distinctively shaped into a rounded dome or cone. Second, the word tagine also refers to the succulent, stew-like dish which is slow-cooked in the traditional cookware. Typically, a tagine is a rich mixture of meat, poultry, or fish, and most often includes vegetables or fruit. Vegetables may also be cooked alone in the tagine. Most people agree that the tagine's origin dates back to the late 18th century when Harun al Rashid ruled the Islamic Empire. However, there is another school of thought that the use of ceramics in Moroccan cooking is probably of Roman influence; Romans were known for their ceramics and likely brought that tradition to their rule of Roman Africa. Either way, the first appearance of recipes cooked tagine-style appeared in the 9th century in the publication The Thousand and One Nights.
9
Jemaa el-Fna
Day 3
The mosque was founded in 1147 by the Almohad caliph Abd al-Mu'min right after he conquered Marrakesh from the Almoravids. A second version of the mosque was entirely rebuilt by Abd al-Mu'min around 1158, with Ya'qub al-Mansur possibly finalizing the construction of the minaret around 1195. This second mosque is the structure that stands today. It is considered a classic and important example of Almohad architecture and of Moroccan mosque architecture generally. The minaret tower, 77 meters (253 ft) in height, is decorated with varying geometric arch motifs and topped by a spire and metal orbs. It likely inspired other buildings such as the Giralda of Seville and the Hassan Tower of Rabat, which was built shortly after in the same era. The minaret is also considered an important landmark and symbol of Marrakesh.

واد اوريكا
Day 4
The Ourika is actually a river that descends from the Moroccan High Atlas Mountains and flows partly into the Ourika Valley – it is actually a tributary of the great Oued Tensift. In Arabic, the word “Oued” means river so the Ourika is an oued passing through the foothills of the Atlas Mountains from an altitude of 1500m and all the villages extending along its valley to the gates of Marrakech. Caution, thunderstorms can cause serious flooding, as in 1995 when thousands of people died as a result of the overflowing of the bed of the oued. With a pleasant climate, surrounded by agricultural fields and olive groves, orchards, almond trees and cherry trees, the road crossing the valley is winding and climbing. The nature is luxuriant and abundant in spring after the rainy season with its bright red soil and terracotta colours, the air is cooler as you gain altitude (a difference of 15 Degrees can be felt in summer) through a succession of breathtaking panoramic views.
14

Riad Yima
Day 5
Hassan Hajjaj’s exuberant portraits capture the cultural multiplicity that animates the streets of Morocco, where the artist grew up. Hajjaj’s practice spans myriad disciplines including sculpture, video, fashion, photography, and performance, but he is perhaps best known for his bright photographs of stylishly dressed subjects who pose in front of patterned backgrounds. The artist places his pictures in custom frames that feature borders inset with commercial goods such as cans of tomato sauce or motor oil. Thanks to his expansive approach to medium and inventive juxtapositions of North African culture and Western iconography, Hajjaj has garnered comparisons to iconoclasts and Pop phenoms such as Andy Warhol. He has exhibited in New York, London, Paris, Marrakesh, Dubai, Berlin, and Los Angeles. His work belongs in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden in Marrakesh, and the Victoria and Albert Museum.
